I woke up around 3:00 am on Monday morning (30th) to go to the bathroom, which is not out of the ordinary. Something felt a little off, but I didn't take too much time to evaluate because I was so tired and out of it. I went back to bed. I woke up again at 5:00 am on the nose and felt the urge to pee really strongly. I felt Kieran kick me really hard, but it was at my belly button and not in my ribs. I knew he had dropped. When I got out of bed I felt a little gush. By the time I got to the bathroom I had soaked my pants and then when I sat down to go the bathroom it became obvious that my water had broken. I got Dan up, (he promtly threw up both hands onto his forehead communicating to me that he was quite surprised and maybe freaking out a bit) then called my Mom, and finally called Jackie to come over. We were able to get on the road by 5:30 am. By this point I was just mildly cramping. By the time we got five miles down the road I had my first contraction. I then proceeded to have consistent and stronger contractions the whole way to the hospital that were anywhere from 2-6 minutes a part. Dan was freaking out a little bit! We got to the hospital by 6 am and by 6:30 I was in the bed and they were able to check me. I was at 5 cm and asked for the epidural right away. I was having intense contractions, but I was handling them ok. Let me tell you...natural contractions are SO much easier compared to pitocin contractions. I'm SO happy I was not induced. By 7:10 the epidural was complete. I had two more contractions and then nothing....ahhhhh....amazing! I could tell when I was having a contraction, but they didn't even make me flinch. By 8:30 I was at 8cm. Our nurse stepped out for a minute to gather supplies and within ten minutes I could tell that I was complete. She checked me again and I was at a 10. The doctor came in and thought we'd do a couple of practice pushes. That was 9:05 am....by 9:22 am little Kieran Carter entered this world. 17 minutes of pushing....I'll take that any day! As soon as the doctor could see his face he had his eyes wide open. He was an a lert little guy and stayed awake for three hours. In duration from my water breaking to him arriving labor/delivery was 4 1/2 hours. I am SO incredibly thankful we left for the hospital right away even though I wasn't even contracting yet. I knew it would all go very fast. Overall it was an amazing experience. It sounds so weird, but it's just a surreal and awesome experience....with the epidural of course! I am so thankful...God was watching over us and for the second time I was able to have a smooth and wonderful birth. Now, if we ever have another we will be buying a new home across the street from the hospital or else we'll really never make it!
