My School District is Famous for a Day!

Here's my boss and the message played on this video is a copy of the phone call we all received at 6:00 this morning. I hung up my phone after I heard it wasn't my school that was closing for the day....darn it! j/k...I'm thinkin about our students as well!

Anyway, you have to love small towns and media mania. Understandably, we had tons of phones calls this morning, but the rumors that flew around aftewards were crazy. The news trucks were here by 9:30 and when they heard someone speculate on who it might be, they went and knocked on the door! Hello, this person might have swine flu! Anyway, it wasn't this student and I think the media needs some meds!

So far so good....the student is apparently doing fine and we should know by tonight if this case is actually swine flu or not.

I wanted to do something fun for your birthday post. First I tried to play a video of the #1 song on the day of your birth, but it wasn't very good. Then I tried calling Grandma to find out details from that day. She couldn't remember how much you weighed...just that you were 7 lbs something and you were her smallest baby. She couldn't remember if you were born during the morning or afternoon, but she said you were almost born in the car because Grandpa was so pokey in coming home from the drug store! So, I figure I'll just say Happy Birthday Mom! Hope you have a great day and I'll see you Mother's Day weekend!!!

Jamestown ND Flooding

This area right over the fence is usually a steep drop down to the water about 30 or more feet. I'm guessing on the feet here, but it's quite a long slope.
Here's a picture from far away of where the water normally sits next to the glory hole. It's kind of hard to see, but it's way in the background. I wish I could have found a picture standing underneath the glory hole so you could tell how larget this structure really is. The fact that it's up to the top is unbelievable.

Here's a video and picture of "the glory hole" that's strategically placed in front of the Jamestown Dam, which holds back the Jamestown Resevoir. The "glory hole" was created so that if the water ever got too high it would save the dam from breaking. However, with water going over the 30 + feet tall structure it means more flooding for Jamestown. I have NEVER seen the water this high. Even during the flood of 97' the water only came up to the base of this strucutre. My mom said that Jamestown is like a war zone with trucks going ALL over building clay dikes right through the middle of streets. They've even heard that the U.S. coast card has dropped off enormous sandbags across the street from the dam in the case of parts of the dam springing a leak. Yikes! She is still seeing her students at our church, the hospitol, and the civic center as Anne Carlsen Center will still be vacant for at least another month.




Praying that it doesn't turn into a worst case scenario for Jamestown!

Random Thoughts From the Dornfeld's

-spending Easter with the Anderson's and telling our God-daughter the "Jesus on the Cross" story and making Graham smile never gets old
-homemade margaritas make for a tough next day!
-Dan is smart;his spare tire underneath his trunk was a real tire, which came in handy while stranded on the side of the road
-starting to train for a 1/4 marathon 3 weeks before the race is not very smart!
-training for a half marathon and finally being able to run outside is amazing
-the scenery here compared to industrial Mandan is amazing x 2!
-7 weeks left of school for me makes me very happy
-Suki continues to think Riker is her boyfriend
-Riker got to visit his friend Buddy twice in the past month;he comes home and goes straight to bed
-Meeko tried dog food while I was on vacation;he never ceases to amaze me
-we are looking forward to warmer and warmer weather, a couple of trips to Wisconsin this summer, a trip for me to ND sometime, and more time that we get to spend with each other this summer!
-Happy Spring!!!

Solo to Mexico

The first three days of my trip to Mexico were really fun and really great. I'm chosing to remember those. Here's some pictures to capture the fun times that were had.

This is the open air market in Mazatlan...very cool place to buy fresh whatever you want!

My first ocean fishing experience...very cool and I have now caught 7 fish in my life!

Happy Easter

Pastor Audrey saw Dan's picture he painted in college in his office one day and she suggested they display it during lent this year. Dan has named it "Resurrection". The message behind the painting is from Martin Luther's Small Catechism where he says, "daily we're drowned to sin and daily we are born again". In the painting you can see the individual taking on the form of the cross, because it is through our baptisms that we are united with Jesus in his death. Some of the images you may miss are that the figure is glistening like the waters from baptism and bursting out of his old skin (sin). We hope you enjoy Dan's image and are having a blessed Easter Sunday!

Gluten and Dairy Free Food We Like

If you didn't already know Dan has jumped on the bandwagon with me in my new eating regime. So far he's made the transition better than I did, I think! Here are some of the ideas we've come up with on what to eat on this restrictive diet.

-cardboard-My best friend Pam was worried about our fiber...not a problem
-berries from the back shrub in our yard-little...yellow...different
-beef, it's what's for dinner.....although at our house most nights it's usually pork or chicken

Ok, so we don't really eat cardboard or berries, but we do eat quite a bit of meat. We've also learned how to make a mean pad tai with bean sprouts, cilantro, vegtables, and more. The only problem is it's hard coming up with new things so we eat a LOT of pad tai.

On a daily basis we eat
-eggs
-brown rice bread
-spoonfuls of chocolate frosting
-nuts
-fruit leathers
-any type of rice product....rice cakes, plain rice, ricedream ice cream
-almond milk
-blue corn chips and salsa

So, we are wondering if you have any good ideas for us on things we could eat. The toughest thing I had with cooking before we ate like this is trying to decide WHAT to make. Now it's even harder.
