Our Favorite Cake!

INGREDIENTS

 1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix
1/2 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
 6 ounces caramel ice cream topping
 3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered toffee, chopped
 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

DIRECTIONS
Bake cake according to package directions for a 9x13 inch pan; cool on wire rack for 5 minutes. Make slits across the top of the cake, making sure not to go through to the bottom.
 In a saucepan over low heat, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, stirring until smooth and blended. Slowly pour the warm topping mixture over the top of the warm cake, letting it sink into the slits; then sprinkle the crushed chocolate toffee bars liberally across the entire cake while still warm. (Hint: I crush my candy bars into small chunks as opposed to crumbs - I like to have pieces I can chew on!)
Let cake cool completely, then top with whipped topping. Decorate the top of the cake with some more chocolate toffee bar chunks and swirls of caramel topping. Refrigerate and serve right from the pan!

Yum! We had some tonight!  I don't put the candy bars on top, but I'm sure it's extra good!

Mini Vacation to the Twin Cities and Fargo!

Fun times in the cities and Fargo this weekend. The beginning of the trip was very exciting for us because we booked this for our honeymoon before we left town! My grandma is doing even better. When we told her we booked our trip she even showed a little smile:)

We, (minus Matt=synod assembly=poor guy) took Laila to the Minnesota zoo, saw a Twins game with Pam and Chris, and even took in a Jon Bon Jovi concert. I think Bon Jovi himself resembles Mick Jagger, in a way except without all the years of drugs. I'm not even a very big fan, but the concert, I must say was really good. It got even better when Mick sang "Start Me Up". Now THAT would be a concert I'd like to see. If Dan doesn't want to go I know Dean will go with me:)

Laila is also getting to be quite the talker. Her L's aren't quite there yet so my name is Yeigh and hers is Lai-ya. Pocohontas was Bobohontas and if Dan and I weren't on our toes at the zoo she'd politely tap us and say "C'mon Dan let's go! C'mon Leigh, lets go while taking each of our hands and guiding us on our way. Dan says she's quite the ham and I'd have to agree!

Overall it was so nice to get away from all of the "real life" stuff happening at home and just enjoy some time together with our closest friends. It was my 4th weekend in Fargo so I think I'm going to stay home for awhile:) The cat and dog hair is starting to accumlate to points where one can see if with the naked eye! Not cool!

DDR rocks!

For those of you who don't know what Dance Dance Revolution is this is what I do to work-out when I'm sick of the gym. Dan lifts in our basement while I do this! This kid is hilarious! It's looks like it's so hard because his legs are so short. I could get it, but it would take quite a few times to get it down. I wouldn't look as cool as this guy either! I just think this is so funny!

Random Thoughts from the Dornfeld's

-I miss my husband:( No more weekends out of town without Dan for awhile. My grandma is much better and getting a tracheotomy ventilator put in tomorrow. She still has a long way to go, but it was great to have her finally awake this weekend. Since she's not able to talk because of the throat ventilator so it's hard to know what she's thinking, but she answers yes/no questions with blinking and she finally started squeezing our hands. About the only expression we got out of her was when I asked her if she liked my jewelry. I knew she wouldn't and we could tell. She put her head back and kind of looked at me like I was nuts! That's my grandma;)

-Dan's extremely tired, the whole two pastor thing is starting to get to him. Sometimes controllable narcolepsy would be fantastic! A few minutes here, a few minutes there could do wonders for his energy levels. I'm going to look into it!

-It's 60 degrees out today! Yeah! It helps with our moods!

-Last month Dan gave up drinking pop (diet mountain dew). Last week he gave it up again. I'm looking at him right now drinking some kind of yellow substance out of a clear glass. He swears it's not pop. It's a mystery!

-Riker's food has two purposes. One for him to eat and get nutrition from. And two, toys for Suki to play with on our kitchen floor. She goes to his bowl, bats a piece out, and it's fun for hours.

-Since I was out of town this past weekend, my co-worker, Paula, took over for me in the Great American Bike race. I haven't heard how much was raised, but I do know that 1,000 people participated.

-Hope everyone has a great week! We are looking forward to spending some time with Pam and her boyfriend Chris and the Anderson's down in the cities. Oh yes, I forgot...Bon Jovi in Fargo too. I've heard it's a good show:)

Dan's Sermon 3-30-08

Random Thoughts from the Dornfeld's

-Peanut butter IS a food group at our house.  We can go through a large jar in a week!

-Apparently our dog snores, as Dan usually will inform me the following morning.  Can you guess who sleeps in comas?

-When I leave for a weekend the animals drive Dan nuts.  When he's  gone they drive me nuts, but we still love them right?

-Ventilators are amazing machines, but I've never been so sick of one as I am right now.  Praying for patience and a strong will for my Grandma;)

-Eating rich foods for me means tasting it twice.  Yuk!  Sorry:(

-People come out of the woodwork when they actually know what's going on to support.  It's been a very needed and appreciated change.  

-We both love our families SO much!  My favorite quote from my  79 year old Grandpa this weekend.  "If this place had a dance floor, I'd be out there, " stated in a very matter of fact way.

-Happy Baptism day to baby Shay....we both thought of you all many times this weekend and wish so much that we could be there;)  I can't wait to hold him!!!

Happy 2nd Ordination Anniversary!

So two years ago from today Dan officially became an ELCA lutheran pastor in his hometown and I remembered! I wasn't there, but I remembered the date of this awesome occasion. So here's a little shout out to my favorite husband for a sometimes rough, but memorable and rewarding two years. I must brag a bit now, did I mention that I remembered, but Dan often receives many emails from congregation members thanking him for his amazing work. I couldn't be any more proud;)

Here are a few emails that he's received this week that I was able to get my hands on.

Pastor Dan,

Just a quick note to say Thank You for all of your great work at Good Shepherd. You are a blessing to us and you always help strengthen our faith. Your message again this past Sunday was one that hit home and got ust hinking about how blessed we are for the gifts we receive from our Lord and Savior. We are truly blessed with your leadership of the youth as well as the entire congregation.

I feel you have really “stepped up to the plate” and you do a wonderful job. I heard comments about what a wonderful job you did at this funeral. I have a great deal of respect for you as a pastor and also as a person.
